History of Maharshi Valmiki Jayanti
The history of Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti is very old. It is believed that this festival is being celebrated in his honor since the time of Ramayana. The story of Maharishi Valmiki’s life is very interesting and many such historical and mythological stories related to his life are famous.
In many places it is mentioned that Maharishi Valmiki was actually a Brahmin and a Bhilani stole him or else in another description of this story it is said that a Bhilani found a child lying on the ant’s bambi. He picked it up and brought it to his house and named it Valmiki.
Similarly, there is another most important story related to his life. According to him, Valmiki ji’s name was Ratnakar before becoming a Maharishi and he used to loot people to feed his stomach. Once he found Narada Muni in a deserted forest, Ratnakar tried to rob him by taking him captive. Then Narad ji asked why do you do such condemnable acts?
To this Ratnakar replied to feed his family. On this, Narad ji asked him that would the family for whom you commit so many sins be ready to participate in this sinful act of yours.
To know the answer to this question of Narada Muni, Ratnakar tied him to a tree and went to his house. On reaching home, he first asked his wife that the sin that I commit, are you with me in that sin? Then his wife said – Swami, you are the guardian of this family, then it is your duty, I have no part in this sin. Depressed by this answer of his wife, Ratnakar reached his father and asked him the same question, on this his father said – son, this is your earning, we have no part in this sin.
Hearing all these things, the robber Ratnakar became very sad and started thinking that for whom he is committing this sin, those people are not ready to be a part of his sin. Saddened by these things, Ratnakar reached Narad Muni and fell at his feet and said, you were absolutely right, forgive me for this behavior of mine.
Narad Muni raised Ratnakar and gave the knowledge of truth and told him – listen Ratnakar, we get the result of the sins and virtues we do on this earth. You are responsible for these misdeeds of yours, you are also responsible for the sins you have committed in your life and you will be responsible for whatever you do next.
Ratnakar was very impressed after hearing these words of Narada Muni and asked him the way to atone for his sins. On this Narada Muni advised him to chant the name of Ram. Because of committing so many sins, Ratnakar could not chant the name of Ram.
Then Narad Muni asked him to chant Mara-Mara, thus while chanting Mara-Mara, Ratnakar started chanting the name of Rama. In this way, due to severe penance for years, his body was covered with ants and when he attained knowledge after his penance, he was called Valmiki for this reason. This story of his life is also known by the name “Ratnakar to Valmiki” by the people.
